Salted cycling gloves |
Day 16 - We wanted to get an earlier start today with the prediction of near record high temperatures, but when we started to load the bike I noticed that the rear tire was flat again. It sure is frustrating, but it doesn't do any good to complain. I needed to put all my energy into repairing the tire. I might need to throw the tire away because it might be impossible to rid the tire completely of all the thorn fragments that caused the problems in the first place. We were finally leaving the motel after 9:00 AM, but we made an early stop for a convenience store breakfast. From there it was a nonstop nearly 30 mile pedal to Helena, AR. where we plan to cross the Mississippi River into Mississippi. It got so hot today that my cycling gloves developed patches of crystallized salt from my sweat. It was in the 90's when we stopped at a restaurant in Helena to have lunch and cool down. We were hoping to find a bike shop, since the town's population is over 15,000, but there were none. Amazingly, however, the person we asked on the street about a bike shop just happened to have a brand new tire tube, in the exact size I needed, still in the box. I bought it from him on the spot for what he paid for it. This gives me 2 spare tubes and a better chance to deal with more tire problems. The temperature got even hotter and we stayed in the air conditioning for over 2 hours. We finally decided that it was useless to attempt to move on because of limited lodging possibilities on the other side of the Mississippi River with the time we had left in the day to reach anything. We wisely decided to stay in a motel in Helena and get a very early start tomorrow morning. Since tomorrow is Sunday, it will be a good time to cross the 2-lane bridge over the River with no rush hour traffic. The weather forecast is predicting temperatures in the upper 90's for several days. We are going to be forced to adjust our usual schedule of travel. We must get to bed earlier, so we can get started at dawn and get our miles in before it gets too hot to travel. Hopefully, all our tires will still be inflated in the morning! We didn't have any flats today after we got started, but we have learned to STAY OFF OF THE GRASS!!
