Flying down the Katy Trail |
Day 3 - We woke early, but didn't get traveling until nearly 9:00 AM because I met a fellow kayaking from Montana to the Gulf. We traded stories for 30 mins. We had wind in our faces as we pedaled south, but most of the time we were protected by the trees on each side of the trail. After 10 miles we stopped in Hartsburg, MO. for breakfast. When we left Hartsburg, we saw a copperhead lying across the bike trail. Despite being a poisonous snake, it really is a beautiful animal with unique patterns and color. We continued south as the wind grew stronger and took a rest break when we reached Jefferson City. From here the Missouri River heads east and the Katy Trail turns with it, but the wind got even stronger and the crosswind slowed our progress. When we reached Mokane, MO. we made the mistake of not stopping for an early dinner as we passed a small carnival in that town. We ended up having to travel over 15 miles before we found a place with any food. We passed several towns along the way with restaurants that had gone out of business, so we regretted not stopping for hot dogs at the carnival. At 5:30 PM, we reached a self service campground that we had stayed at before and we decided to stop earlier than we had planned. We had intended to make it to Hermann, MO. for the night, but we still had over 10 miles to go and we were pretty tired. We traveled over 55 miles today, even though we had another rear flat tire! Our average speed was over 10 mi/hr. We plan to have a peaceful evening in this secluded self service campground. Geri and I are the only campers here! That's a lot different than the campground we stayed in last night!!
